Day 2

What's that other famous district in Berlin? Spandau! But not so fast. I took another close look to my environment at the Ostbahnhof.

Look for example at that Lidl sign. Open every day, even on Sundays! from 8h to 22h. The clerks there are very friendly and very fast. They even put your stuff into bags!

The Vienna service isn't that way at all.

Checkpoint Charlie

I wanted to know, how the parting of Berlin influenced the people there. And I figured that out. And saw, how Berlin looks today.

But how did Berlin look back at the days of the wall? I can remember tiny bits from back when I was young. After all, the Berliner Wall stood until 1989, I've been at school back then.

The house at the Checkpoint Charly told me more about that.

Spandau

Ok, I've spoiled it. My travel lead me to that other famous Berlin district. Spandau. Admit it, you've heard about the Spandau Ballet.

I didn't know, that Spandau was a district in Berlin. Neither did I know that there was a atomic reactor somewhere out there. Even though the train didn't stop there, I took some nice pictures of it.

Btw. that guy you see here tried to make some bucks in the subway. I know that from our subways in Vienna.

Olympic Stadion

Another place that raised my interest was the Berlin Olympic Stadion. It's also world famous. As far as I recall, the 3rd Reich hosted an olympic event back in the days.

So, you've already guessed it, the stadion is big, too. And it has, like almost everything in Berlin, a whole lot of grafitti on it.

That's the way things are in Berlin. Big and full of Grafitti.

Lehrter Bahnhof

The german rail road company "DB" (Deutsche Bahn -- German Trains or something) has one of these big projects going on in Berlin. The Lehrter Bahnhof (the central train station) is basically a huge glass roof.

See it for yourself, I took a couple of pictures.

You can see the Lehrter Bahnhof from the Reichstag and the Reichstag from the Lehrter Bahnhof.

Friedrichstraße

The Friedrichstraße is famous for its Friedrichstadtpalast. Did you know, that there is a shop called Dussmann that specialises on cultural stuff? And did you know that it is closed on Sundays? I don't understand that, Lidl for example is open on Sundays.

What especially raised my interest were these Alice posters all over Berlin. What could they be about? When I first saw them, I thought they'd advertise some new television series. Like Alias or something.

But boy was I wrong...

Heading home

Two very busy days came to an end. I was very, very tired already. My feat hurt. So I chilled a bit on an open-air antiques shop near the Ostbahnhof. I also tried the shop called Dunkin' Donuts'.

They have very big portions (fits perfectly to Berlin), good prices and high quality. Don't know why there's no Dunkin' Donuts' in Vienna.

I also saw this oldtimer standing around. I wonder what brand it is? It sure looks familiar...

Mein Block - Sido / Aggro Berlin

For those of you who lived under a rock the last couple of months. I cut the background-loop you should hear on this page from a song called "Mein Block" interpreted by the artist Sido.

Sido signed on the label Aggro Berlin and fits very well to the topic Berlin. He sings about his Plattenbau in that song.
